The Ancient and Scenic North

While most allied forces operated in the south, there is no shortage of significant military and historic sites worth visiting in the north of Vietnam. Hanoi hosts many interesting sites from the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, Hoa Lo Prison (aka Hanoi Hilton), sties of shot down US aircraft disasters, and the Thang Long ancient citadel from nearby where the northern leadership planned the war effort against the US allies and southern government. From Hanoi there are countless short journeys possible to legendary colonial era battlefields, and further afield into more remote Viet Minh sanctuaries. An area we particularly love visitng is the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park with its stunning karst scenery and caves, as well as incredible revolutionary history at the crossroads of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. In the northwest Dien Bien Phu was the scene of the siege that ended the First Indochina war. The northern frontier was once the site of the endless arm-wrestle for sovereignty against the Chinese. To the east the spectacular Ha Long Bay - no visit would be complete without understanding the significance of Haiphong to the French and US wars, and we feel any history buff will be amazed to learn the story of how the ingenious Vietnamese won, arguably their greatest military victory against the invading Yuan Dynasty led by the son of Kublai Khan on the Bach dang River!
